You'll be practicing simple conversations right away in this introductory course, which focuses on everyday phrases and commands.

The present tense of 15-20 of the most common verbs will be emphasized:
Yo compro leche -- "I buy milk."

When: Mondays, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Enrollment: Ongoing, beginning April 14th, 2008
Location: 818 Fifth Ave., San Rafael (Kumon Tutoring Center, located at street level).
Cost: $11.00 hour, session of two hours once a week. Materials included in the price.

SPANISH 2
In this class you'll add new verbs and vocabulary as you gain confidence speaking in the complete present tense, and learn to use the future tense:
      -- Voy a comprar leche -- "I'm going to buy milk".

When: Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $11 per hour. Two hour session once a week. Price includes materials.

Spanish Levels 3 to Fluent
You're making progress! In addition to using commands, and the present and future tenses, you'll learn the present progressive:
--Estoy comprando leche-- "I am buying milk."

The simple past tense will be introduced:
--Ayer Maria compro leche-- "Yesterday Maria bought milk."

When: Different Days and times, depending on your class level.

Medical Terminology

As Marin's Latino population grows, a working knowledge of Spanish is becoming an increasingly valuable asset for health professionals. Today, one in three patients that medical personnel come in contact with speak Spanish. Clear communication is essential to good patient care. In collaboration with Marin General Hospital, I'm offering two beginning level Spanish classes that emphasize medical vocabulary and cross-cultural communication skills in the healthcare setting. These ongoing 8-session classes will improve both your job skills and your career potential.

The course will cover such topics as:

  • Greeting patients, taking them through the admission process, and familiarizing them with various aspects of the hospital
  • Physical examinations, directions and commands
  • Terminology for body parts, common diseases and symptoms
  • Terminology associated with specific procedures, tests and surgery
  • Conveying instructions about medications and follow-up care
